Good drive, bad software July 29, 2010 Oreoflow (Plano, TX) The drive itself works great. Installation is easy and the drive is quiet and fast. I have no complaints about the drive itself at all. However, the software is a different subject. The software that comes with it is old, very outdated, and not very robust. To upgrade to a reasonable version of PowerDVD costs another $60, which negates any value created by buying a cheap drive.
Might not be able to play all of your Blu-Ray movies June 27, 2010 Mark (Fresno, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have a similar model to this, the LiteON DH-4O1S-73C, also a 4x BD player. I believe this is simply the latest version of the same drive I purchased a year ago; nearly same price, extremely similar numbers for speed, latency, cache, etc. For the price, it's O.K., but what I am discovering is that some Blu-Ray movie titles simply will not play on this drive. It won't even be recognized as having a disc; have both Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and Linux OS's. This is after updating the firmware. Movies like The Fifth Element, 10,000 BC and Transformers. (those last two are per another persons complaint I found, The Fifth Element is my own discovery). The Fifth Element disc plays flawlessly on both my PS3 and my LG Blu-Ray player. Frankly, I would spend a few extra bucks on a reader that will consistently be able to play common titles and receives better support than what Lite-ON provides. Perhaps this IHOS104-08 doesn't suffer from the same uncertainty that the DH-401S-73C does, but I'm not going to risk it. And their lame response: "Thank you for contacting Liteon IT Support. For your situation, sorry to tell you that your model doesn t support Windows 7 or Linux operating system, we suggest you to put the drive on another PC which runs Windows2000/XP/Vista for further diagnosis, due to we have done complete testing for this drive. Worked Perfectly Out of the Box - Highly Recommended! June 11, 2010 CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought this LITE-ON Blu-Ray Internal Drive for use as a second drive in our shop computer and it has far exceeded my expectations! This drive reads standard DVD and Blu-ray discs and the included software (Blu-ray PowerDVD) is will get you started watching in minutes. Here are my observations: Pros - + Easy to Install; literally took less than fifteen minute from opening the box to having it mounted in my HP tower chassis + No Drivers Needed; my PC (with Vista) recognized the drive without any trouble + Playback Software; includes CyberLink's PowerDVD, which isn't the most feature rich program but it does play Blu-ray and DVD + Extra Faceplate; includes a black (installed) and white faceplate to match your PC case color + Includes SATA Cable Cons - - Does not include power converter cable for connecting to standard PC power supplies (I had to order [...] LP4 TO 2 SATA INTERNAL POWER ( PYO2LP4SATA )) This was so easy to install and get working on my system that I am considering getting one for my mother's PC so she can watch Blu-ray movies as well. Highly recommended! Note: You should go to the CyberLink web page, go to the "Support" drop-down, and select "BD Advisor" to run a scan on your PC. Be sure to check the "Advanced" tab to ensure Blu-ray full support on your PC. CFH
Older Monitors on DVI will not work without HDCP compatibility. June 10, 2010 B. Ng (CA, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this drive from another vendor, and I would like to inform those with compatibility issues. It took a few hours for me to figure out the workaround. If you're like me, with a new system and an older LCD dvi monitor, I'm sure you will encounter this problem. Everything is up and ready to play Blu Ray DVD movies, except when you try to play it an error message pops up and tells you that your display is not HDCP compliant. Which is a fancy way of telling you to buy a new display with HDCP compatibility. Solution: Plug into a VGA port. Buy a HDCP compliant display. Use Slysoft AnyDVD HD Overall this is a good drive for the price, but for those who are less tech savvy you're gonna need to spend more money on software or even a new display.
