The Arab anti-defamation leagues understandably had a field day with this one. Sally Field plays Betty Mahmoody, an American who marries an Iranian (Alfred Molina) and has a child. They go back to Iran for a visit and, to her horror, he tells her he's decided to stay there. If she wants to leave, she must leave her daughter behind. If she stays, Betty must live in a culture vastly different and, she believes, very dangerous. Part thriller, part culture clash, the film certainly takes advantage of Americans' perceptions of Iran after the unrest of the '70s and early '80s. Molina is truly despicable as the husband, while Field projects a lot of overheated anguish as Betty tries to figure out a way to escape the country with her daughter. Overheated, in fact, is the word for the whole melodrama. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Must see   August 14, 2010

"Sally Field plays Betty Mahmoody, an American who marries an Iranian (Alfred Molina) and has a child. They go back to Iran for a visit and, to her horror, he tells her he's decided to stay there and -- guess what? -- she has no rights. If she wants to leave, she has to leave her daughter behind. But if she stays, she has to live by Islamic law, under which women are subservient; she may be subject to beatings and a slave-like existence..." This is a must see for all americans before going to the middle east I had my two sons 15 and 10 watch this to help them understand how lucky they are to live where the do! and they are proud to be americans even more and so glad their baby sister is born here and not over there!.

2 out of 5 stars my mother's best friend knows "the real betty"   August 2, 2010

I thought I'd say a few things about betty. My mother's best friend knows her and said that while the escape was true - because it was hard for anyone, not just her, to leave Iran - many other parts are exaggerated.

First of all, her husband being a jerk had little to do with him being Muslim. Not to say he wasn't a jerk. He would have been a jerk whether white or black or brown, typical overly controlling jerk. The stress on his being Muslim was stressed for culture shock and pity of an American being oppressed by the big bad Muslim Middle East. My mother's best friend has lived in Tehran for over 25 years, like many American wives of Muslim men have and they are doing just fine. This is the story of one particular jerk - who just happened to be Muslim - and the difficulties of leaving a country divided by revolution.

So before you go about pointing figures, know that this is about a woman escaping an overly controlling relationship, not a Muslim extremist.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible   May 28, 2010

I was blown away by this movie- Producers did excellent job in portraying repressive Iranian regime( which incidentally hasn't changed a whole lot since the 80s) which took away any rights that women had. I read enough first hand accounts of women from Middle East to know that it is a very factually acurate movie. Watch it to see what would happen if you are a women in the Middle East(not just in the 80s but also today since it hasn't changed one bit). I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most controversial and suspenseful dramas ever!!!!   May 2, 2010

MAAAN! This movie REALLY shocked me! I never seen such a suspenseful drama since Midnight Express. This is the true story of Betty Mahmoody, an american woman that went to Iran with her daughter to visit the husband's family. Her iranian husband later told her that the supposed "visit" is actually a moving and if she doesn't want to stay then she will suffer the consequences or she can just return to United States BUT WITHOUT HER DAUGHTER. Lucky for her, she found some friendly iranians that help her out because the U.S.A. cannot do anything for her because of the iranian laws. "Will she be able to escape from Iran and return to the U.S.A. with her daughter?"

The movie has great acting, great cast, and a chilling scrip! It's amazing how some testimonies can later turn into a great movie. It's also hard to do movies like this because of the controversies, but is also important to learn from the facts and not just ignore them.

NOTE: Many people have been saying that this movie is racist, a lie, and a nationalits propaganda. I don't think that way because the story makes a lot of sense to me in the basic point of view. NOW! Bad testimonies can be harmful for the reputation of a person, family, race or culture, but THAT doesn't mean that the story was made in the name of evil or harm. Every kind testimony doesn't necessarily represent realism, it represent the point of view of the fact lived by that person. Sometimes testimonies can be graphic, but it's the way that they are described, nobody can describe the way that everybody wants because each person is an individual. I think that everybody just perceive things the way they do, not the way that OTHER people do.

I guess that one the messages of this movie is that if you are going to get married to someone that comes from a entire different culture then you must know about his culture and not think of that person as somebody from your own culture.

Adios.
