Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). --Tom Keogh

No doubt that along with The Party, this movie is still one of the very best comedies ever..slick..energetic..no sloppy love story scenes to bog it down, unlike the over-rated Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines.
I hope they re-release It's a Mad... as the DVD is not the ultra widescreen ratio it was made in, so the actors on the far left and right have either been chopped off or half their face are only visible.

5 out of 5 stars Watch it With Your Children!   August 3, 2010

As I have stated in the title of this review..."Watch it With Your Children"!
It will be one of the more memorable experiences you will ever share with your child/children.
I was lucky to have seen the original theatre release of Mad World in 1963 when I was eleven years. I believe this movie was the creation of my personal sense of humor in those formative years of childhood and yes, I have shared this movie (2001 DVD) with my own three children when they too were close to the same age as when I first saw the movie.

As I recall there was a similar movie/remake of Mad World around 2001 called "Rat Race". Almost identical plot with the exception being it was a truly horrid movie! I took the kids to see it and declared as soon as we arrived home I would search for a DVD of the original Mad World online and have it delivered overnight.
This I accomplished through Amazon.com and we have all lived happily ever after. LOL

This is a truly great movie even in today's world and there will never be another like this. If you want to see the Funniest Movie of All Time...you must see It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!
No other comedy even comes close except Blazing Saddles...even that is a distant second!

Enjoy it with your kids all.
